Often considered the pinnacle of Australian rugby league,
State Of Origin is one of Australia’s premier sporting events, often played in front of sold-out stadiums. The series itself is contested between New South Wales and Queensland, who have formed an epic rivalry that has seen the series produce the toughest and most skilful Rugby League in the world. Since its inception in 1980, the results between NSW and QLD have been extraordinarily even, adding further emphasis to the competition’s success. Overall the Maroons have won 16 series compared to the Blues 12. In games won, the Maroons hold a seven-game advantage over the Blues with 49 wins compared to 42 for NSW.
In the 2011 State of Origin series NSW and Queensland headed to Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane with the series locked at 1-1. Queensland won the decider 34-24 to claim a record sixth consecutive State of Origin series victory, having held the series since 2006.
The 2012 State of Origin series will be split between three cities, with Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium hosting game one, before the series moved to Sydney’s ANZ Stadium in game two, and Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane for game three. Led by Ricky Stuart, NSW will face a mammoth task to overturn QLD’s dominance in 2012, although Mal Meninga’s Queensland team will face a challenge without captain and playmaker Darren Lockyer, who retired at the end of the 2011 season.

I was impressed with the Blues team selected for Origin One next week. It reflects a realisation that NSW are going to have to score a lot of points to beat Queensland. There’s been a lot of discussion around a few of the more contentious selections: notably, the recently demoted Michael Jennings in the centres [...]

NSW assistant coach Trent Barrett believes Todd Carney has the mental strength and bolter Jamie Buhrer the toughness to handle the rigours of Origin. Speaking to The Roar inside the NSW camp, Barrett says the pressure “doesn’t worry” Carney. “He’s a different sort of a bloke Toddy, he just cruises along and does his stuff,” [...]

Us New South Welshmen are a tired old bunch. The reason we are so critical and ruthless on our mighty Blues is simple. We want success. We want the fire and the blood and most importantly, we want to win. Ironically, it might just be a Kiwi born prop that brings back the pain for [...]

Former New South Wales hero Steve Roach ignited one of the year’s spiciest debates last month by declaring Tigers hooker Robbie Farah was not “an Origin type player.” This week’s announcement of the New South Wales team means that Farah is the Blues No 9 whether big Blocker likes it or not. For what it’s [...]
