Known as the glamour club of the A-League, Sydney FC has lured the likes of Dwight Yorke, Benito Carbone and Juninho to the harbour city. Having been crowned the inaugural A-League champions in 2005/06, the club went on to claim their first premiership, and second championship, in a highly successful 2009/10 season. Under constant pressure to match the increasing expectations of the Australian public, Sydney finished last season in a dismal ninth position. Despite this failure, the club has remained loyal to manager Vitezslav Lavicka in the hope that he can return them to the top of the A-League.

Crook the right man at the right time for Sydney FC
by Luke Doherty - May 15th 2012 @ 4:35am
He isn’t Graham Arnold or Tony Popovic, but Ian Crook is the right man at the right time for Sydney FC. The club installed Crook as its new head coach yesterday, with the wide-reaching search ending close to home. Crook has been working in Sydney’s youth set-up and that experience has him uniquely placed at [...]

by Angela Habashy - May 10th 2012 @ 2:13am
Sydney FC have again stepped up their search for a new coach and, while they remain coy about who they have in mind this time, the A-League club is adamant he must be Australian. With the negotiations to sign Central Coast boss Graham Arnold falling through, former Socceroo and Crystal Palace assistant coach Tony Popovic, [...]

Only Sydney remains on the A-League coaching carousel
by Tony Tannous - May 8th 2012 @ 1:07am
With Graham Arnold confirming late yesterday afternoon his intentions to remain at the Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Heart set to announce their replacement for John van’t Schip this morning, there’ll only be two spots left on the coaching merry-go-round for next season. When the Heart announce their man, at 10.30am EST, it will leave [...]
Time for the new breed to board the coaching carousel
by Tony Tannous - April 17th 2012 @ 12:12am
While attention this week is on Sunday’s grand final in Brisbane, hovering in the background are a raft of technical decisions and announcements about managers that need to be made ahead of next season. This includes key ones in Melbourne and in Sydney, particularly out west. By my calculations, there are only four managers certain [...]
How to schedule the Sydney A-League derby
by Cappuccino - April 11th 2012 @ 1:36am
One of the bonuses of having an A-League team in Western Sydney is the creation of a second city derby. Coupled with the Melbourne derby that makes six huge blockbuster matches, each with the potential for large crowds and big TV ratings. But for the league to fully utilize a second derby, the FFA must [...]
The same old mistakes, but why FFA have got it right
by kostako - April 6th 2012 @ 8:53am
This Thursday marked the conclusion to a series of events oddly reminiscent of the old NSL. From a license being stripped and the future of a club in doubt, to the forced introduction of a completely new franchise, it’s been an interesting time to be a football fan in Australia. In theory, the introduction of [...]

Fans want a club, not a name, that fills them with Pride
by Tony Tannous - May 16th 2012 @ 3:30am
While the word “pride” featured prominently in the discourse about the desired culture of the new Western Sydney franchise, for a while yesterday it seemed the FFA had the word “culture” confused with the word “name”. That was the only conclusion to draw after The World Game yesterday reported that Pride was among the FFA’s [...]

For Holger Osieck, the pool of players Australian football has for him contains few surprises these days. Well into his second year as coach of the Socceroos, the German tactician has taken a close look many times over at the full spectrum of players at his disposal and has now settled on a core group.
