The Indian Premier League is an eight team Twenty20 Cricket competition which experienced its inaugural season in 2008. Before the tournament began, every IPL team was summoned to a player auction in order to form its roster for the coming season. Indian batsmen/Wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is currently the highest paid player in the IPL, receiving a contract with the Chennai Super Kings worth 1.5 million dollars a season. The IPL’s fourth season was contested in 2011 and was won by Chennai Super Kings, who won their second consecutive title after beating Bangalore in the final.

Cricket at the Olympics? No-ball!
by shanebrien - May 17th 2012 @ 3:01am
There is strong support building for cricket’s inclusion in 2020 Olympic Games, but is it the best way to globalise the game? Ideally, if cricket were to be introduced within the 2020 games schedule, T20 would seemingly be the best fit. The main reason pitched for the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is that [...]

IPL is quickly losing its appeal
by Patrick O'Keeffe - May 4th 2012 @ 1:13am
The first season of the Indian Premier League opened in a blaze of glory. The competition promised to re-define cricket. Teams were known as franchises, players were purchased in auctions – fetching prices that Sir Donald Bradman could only have imagined – while dancers, fireworks and superstar franchise owners pledged to deliver a pure entertainment [...]
Is the IPL hurting West Indian cricket?
by Garfield Robinson - May 2nd 2012 @ 11:15am
The West Indies, seventh in the ICC Test rankings, were recently locked in battle with fourth placed Australia with six of its top warriors unable to join the clash. Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo were all thousands of miles from the Caribbean front-lines, arrayed in party attire [...]
IPL deserves an exclusive window
by David Lord - April 28th 2012 @ 6:08am
One of the briefs of the International Cricket Council, the sports’ governing body, is to “position itself and be empowered to promote, develop, and act in the best interests of the international game as a whole”. We all know that’s what it’s supposed to so, but rarely does. The perfect case in point is the [...]

The unbearable duress of being an Indian fan
by sudhanshu.singhi - February 29th 2012 @ 2:00am
The only problem with having a Midas touch is that you eventually lose it. And ironically it usually happens after one has tasted lofty and unimaginable heights. Less than a year ago, it was all about Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MSD) – captain courageous, captain cool, greatest Indian captain ever… the sobriquets were endless. At the [...]

Will we see a home Test series defeat for India now?
by Suneer Chowdhary - February 1st 2012 @ 7:26am
The Roar columnist Ryan O’Connell, in his latest piece, lambasted the BCCI for being arrogant towards Tests in foreign, bouncy lands. I will go a step further and say that the issue with the board is not restricted to their mentality regarding Tests outside the sub-continent. It is their general attitude towards this format that needs [...]

Sports like rugby seeing rise in popularity in the USA
by thatgirlmegan - May 17th 2012 @ 2:33am
When it comes to sports television in America, the three sports that rule the airwaves are football, baseball and basketball. Other sports like hockey, tennis and golf can be found on basic cable and sometimes network TV for bigger events. But they’re still considered secondary sports by most American sports fans. NFL is by far [...]

Daniel Vettori deserves more respect
by shanebrien - May 15th 2012 @ 4:44am
Defining the greats of the game is not an easy task. Arguably, greatness can be temporary, reliant only on time, context and memory yet true greatness reaches down through generations. It is now time to acknowledge that Dan Vettori deserves this status. How do we define greatness? Glory, nobility, illustriousness and immortality are just a [...]
The left-handed advantage in cricket
by Garfield Robinson - May 15th 2012 @ 4:22am
In November last year, New Zealand and Zimbabwe played a Test match at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and of the 22 players on show, Daniel Vettori was the only left-handed batsman. This is quite unusual as there is normally an oversupply of left-handers in international cricket. In the recently concluded series in the [...]

Time for Ricky Ponting to pull up stumps on Test career
by shanebrien - May 14th 2012 @ 6:43am
Players realise there is huge amount of money to be earned in cricket and with the booming success of the IPL, the opportunities to play on make the decision to give the game away a lot harder than in recent years. Past players found it somewhat easier to walk away from the game. While you [...]
Brad Haddin must not be selected for Australia again
by dase248 - May 12th 2012 @ 9:17am
Brad Haddin was not available for selection in the Australian One Day International side to tour the British Isles in June, but if he had, he shouldn’t have been chosen anyway. Haddin was seen as the ideal replacement when Adam Gilchrist retired due to his ability as a gloveman and as an aggressive batsmen. However [...]
