Barry Richards and his golden summer of 1970/71
by sheek - March 24th 2012 @ 3:28am
The Australian summer of 1970/71 tends to be more enjoyable in retrospect than it was in the actual fabric of living it. But I guess this is the way with many things. Looking back, that tormented summer of Ashes cricket introduced to Test cricket the holy trinity – Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh. [...]
Five things we learned from Sheffield Shield final
by Marcus Taylor - March 21st 2012 @ 6:54am
Only the hardcore cricket fan would have watched the 2011/12 Sheffield Shield final closely. For those that didn’t, here are five things to take away from the game. Selectors made the right call in axing Ricky Ponting as captain Don’t get me wrong, I love Ricky. But his captaincy lurches from average to poor. In [...]

Baseball scouts should look to cricketing talent
by The Crowd - March 8th 2012 @ 3:06am
Recently, I’ve been unable to attend a cricket match in Perth. A little thing called kids and a slight stroke sort of slowed me down for the past 18 months. However, I trotted the two boys off to the Victoria versus WA match at the semi-cavernous WACA ground last Friday and Saturday, revisiting old stomping [...]
Cricket’s rotation policy leaves too many questions
by Damian Sharry - March 3rd 2012 @ 7:16am
The 2011 Argus Review into Australian cricket was an attempt tohelp Cricket Australia deliver the best team it could. The previous selection panel under Andrew Hilditch was heavily criticised, particularly during the Ashes debacle. One of the consistent criticisms regarded poor communication between the selection panel and players. But it appears, even with a new [...]
Australian cricket’s Unlucky XI: Part two
by Stoffy18 - March 1st 2012 @ 2:57am
Stuart Law (VC): Vice-captaining the side is former Queensland captain, banana bender Stuart Law. Law is famously recognised for leading his Queensland side to their first Sheffield Shield title in 1994/1995 (after a 68 year wait). However, it wasn’t just his performance as captain that won him the accolades of many. Law was a prolific [...]
Australian cricket’s Unlucky XI: Part one
by Stoffy18 - February 29th 2012 @ 3:20am
When you think nostalgia, names like Lillee, Marsh, Border, Ponting, McGrath and Warne get tossed around. But what If I was to say Cox, Siddons or Di Venuto? Why these players you ask? Well, from an international perspective they have one thing in common: Zero Test appearances. That’s right, nought, nix, nada, niente, a goose-egg, [...]
Ryobi Cup classic shows why Australian cricket is great
by The Crowd - February 27th 2012 @ 6:44am
There were a range of things about Saturday night’s Ryobi Cup final that saved it from joining the ranks of also-ran finals. Obviously the tied result was noteworthy. But after scratching the surface, you could see all the things that make Australian cricket great. 570 runs in a day. 14 wickets. An amazing finish. There [...]
Thrilling final proves domestic cricket far from dead
by bigdog2 - February 26th 2012 @ 11:36pm
The recent Ryobi Cup one-day domestic final was one cricket match I will never forget. That’s not because the Redbacks won – after all I am from New South Wales – but because the critics of domestic cricket were left stunned by the quality of the match. The talent from grade cricket is coming in, [...]
Ryobi Cup final shows Australian cricket’s depth
by The Crowd - February 26th 2012 @ 3:43am
How good was the Ryobi Cup Final? I’m pleased for the Redbacks, but commiserations to the Tigers after playing such a strong game. The game showed Australian cricket’s considerable depth, and gave the Australian selectors more ammunition to continue to make changes. Because the Ryobi Cup has been provided with exposure via on Fox Sports [...]

Cricket at the Olympics? No-ball!
by shanebrien - May 17th 2012 @ 3:01am
There is strong support building for cricket’s inclusion in 2020 Olympic Games, but is it the best way to globalise the game? Ideally, if cricket were to be introduced within the 2020 games schedule, T20 would seemingly be the best fit. The main reason pitched for the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is that [...]

Sports like rugby seeing rise in popularity in the USA

When it comes to sports television in America, the three sports that rule the airwaves are football, baseball and basketball. Other sports like hockey, tennis and golf can be found on basic cable and sometimes network TV for bigger events. But they’re still considered secondary sports by most American sports fans. NFL is by far [...]

Daniel Vettori deserves more respect
by shanebrien - May 15th 2012 @ 4:44am
Defining the greats of the game is not an easy task. Arguably, greatness can be temporary, reliant only on time, context and memory yet true greatness reaches down through generations. It is now time to acknowledge that Dan Vettori deserves this status. How do we define greatness? Glory, nobility, illustriousness and immortality are just a [...]
The left-handed advantage in cricket
by Garfield Robinson - May 15th 2012 @ 4:22am
In November last year, New Zealand and Zimbabwe played a Test match at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and of the 22 players on show, Daniel Vettori was the only left-handed batsman. This is quite unusual as there is normally an oversupply of left-handers in international cricket. In the recently concluded series in the [...]

Time for Ricky Ponting to pull up stumps on Test career
by shanebrien - May 14th 2012 @ 6:43am
Players realise there is huge amount of money to be earned in cricket and with the booming success of the IPL, the opportunities to play on make the decision to give the game away a lot harder than in recent years. Past players found it somewhat easier to walk away from the game. While you [...]
Brad Haddin must not be selected for Australia again
by dase248 - May 12th 2012 @ 9:17am
Brad Haddin was not available for selection in the Australian One Day International side to tour the British Isles in June, but if he had, he shouldn’t have been chosen anyway. Haddin was seen as the ideal replacement when Adam Gilchrist retired due to his ability as a gloveman and as an aggressive batsmen. However [...]
