Barry Richards and his golden summer of 1970/71

by sheek - March 24th 2012 @ 3:28am

The Australian summer of 1970/71 tends to be more enjoyable in retrospect than it was in the actual fabric of living it. But I guess this is the way with many things. Looking back, that tormented summer of Ashes cricket introduced to Test cricket the holy trinity – Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh. [...]

Only the hardcore cricket fan would have watched the 2011/12 Sheffield Shield final closely. For those that didn’t, here are five things to take away from the game. Selectors made the right call in axing Ricky Ponting as captain Don’t get me wrong, I love Ricky. But his captaincy lurches from average to poor. In [...]

Baseball scouts should look to cricketing talent

by The Crowd - March 8th 2012 @ 3:06am

Recently, I’ve been unable to attend a cricket match in Perth. A little thing called kids and a slight stroke sort of slowed me down for the past 18 months. However, I trotted the two boys off to the Victoria versus WA match at the semi-cavernous WACA ground last Friday and Saturday, revisiting old stomping [...]

Cricket’s rotation policy leaves too many questions

by Damian Sharry - March 3rd 2012 @ 7:16am

The 2011 Argus Review into Australian cricket was an attempt tohelp Cricket Australia deliver the best team it could. The previous selection panel under Andrew Hilditch was heavily criticised, particularly during the Ashes debacle. Stuart Law (VC): Vice-captaining the side is former Queensland captain, banana bender Stuart Law. Law is famously recognised for leading his Queensland side to their first Sheffield Shield title in 1994/1995 (after a 68 year wait). However, it wasn’t just his performance as captain that won him the accolades of many. Law was a prolific [...]

When you think nostalgia, names like Lillee, Marsh, Border, Ponting, McGrath and Warne get tossed around. But what If I was to say Cox, Siddons or Di Venuto? Why these players you ask? Well, from an international perspective they have one thing in common: Zero Test appearances. That’s right, nought, nix, nada, niente, a goose-egg, [...]

Ryobi Cup classic shows why Australian cricket is great

by The Crowd - February 27th 2012 @ 6:44am

There were a range of things about Saturday night’s Ryobi Cup final that saved it from joining the ranks of also-ran finals. Obviously the tied result was noteworthy. But after scratching the surface, you could see all the things that make Australian cricket great. 570 runs in a day. 14 wickets. An amazing finish. There [...]

Thrilling final proves domestic cricket far from dead

The recent Ryobi Cup one-day domestic final was one cricket match I will never forget. That’s not because the Redbacks won – after all I am from New South Wales – but because the critics of domestic cricket were left stunned by the quality of the match. The talent from grade cricket is coming in, [...]

Ryobi Cup final shows Australian cricket’s depth

by The Crowd - February 26th 2012 @ 3:43am

How good was the Ryobi Cup Final? I’m pleased for the Redbacks, but commiserations to the Tigers after playing such a strong game. The game showed Australian cricket’s considerable depth, and gave the Australian selectors more ammunition to continue to make changes. Because the Ryobi Cup has been provided with exposure via on Fox Sports [...]
